Your Hero Journey was a project that came into being as a result of a collaboration with mindfulness practitioner and storyteller Sita Brand, founder of the charity Settle Stories. The project, called “Change Your Story”, was a grant funded project that incorporated mindfulness, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and storytelling to work with people with a range of mental health concerns. The project was externally evaluated and assessed using the WEMWBS (Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale). Evaluation demonstrated an average 7 point increase in self-reported well-being among participants over the course of the programme.
The Hero Journey element has since been abstracted out and run individually and online. In the Hero Journey, participants are invited to identify 6 core beliefs about their identity, their acheivements, their place within the world, and to construct symbols or metaphors that represent those beliefs. They are then guided in writing a story, using the “Hero’s Journey” mythological pattern identified by Joseph Campbell. As they work with the symbols in this way, various exercises are provided to help them restructure the way in which these beliefs “sit” within the greater context of their sense of self and their sense of their place within the world.
