Elements of Enchantment is an ongoing project to explore the trance effect in storytelling/listening. There is an Urdu word, goya, which it apparently conveys a contemplative ‘as-if’ that nonetheless feels like reality, and describes the suspension of disbelief that can occur, often through good storytelling. It is this experience that the project aims to explore, including the means by which we enter it, by which it is induced and intensified in different storytelling settings, the uses to which it is put, and so on.
Areas of interest have so far included
- The role of the storyteller’s trance in leading the listener
- Story openers
- Rhythm, repetition and rhyme
- Nested and frame stories
- The use of metaphor as induction
